Why Wait? TSA Pre✓™ & Global Entry

By Hollis Davis and Jamie Anderson

We have mentioned these processes in previous blogs, but this week we take a more in depth look at and discuss the benefits of TSA Pre✓™ and Global Entry. As you will see, both are worth knowing about and if you qualify, they can make for a much improved travel experience.

What is TSA Pre✓™?

TSA Pre✓™ allows low-risk travelers to experience expedited, more efficient security screening at participating U.S. airport checkpoints. Qualifying, registered travellers no longer need to remove their belts, shoes or lightweight jackets. This results in quicker transit through airport security screening, faster moving lines and ultimately a far better travel experience.

TSA Pre✓™ is not available to everyone, but interested candidates can now pre-enrol for the program at https://universalenroll.dhs.gov/.  Although the TSA will always incorporate random and unpredictable security measures throughout the airport and no individual will be guaranteed TSA Pre✓™ screening, we certainly recommend that our clients check to see if they qualify!

Once travellers have the TSA Pre✓™ indicator on their boarding pass, they can use the TSA Pre✓™ lane. They present their boarding pass and Government-issued ID to the Travel Document Checker who will scan the barcode. It's that easy!

What is Global Entry?

For those travellers returning to the US on an international flight, Global Entry is a US Customs and Border Protection program that allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Though intended for frequent international travelers, there is no minimum number of trips necessary to qualify for this program. At airports, program participants proceed to the Global Entry kiosks, present their machine-readable passport, place their fingertips on the scanner for fingerprint verification, and make a customs declaration.  The kiosk issues the traveler a transaction receipt and directs the traveler to baggage claim and the exit.  Travelers must be pre-approved for this program and undergo a rigorous background check and interview before enrollment. There is a $100 non-refundable fee to apply and once approved, is valid for five years.
