While you’re packing for that long-awaited vacation, don’t forget one very important thing… your sense of humor!
Unexpected occurrences can happen at any time, but knowing how to keep your sense of humor will ensure that you make the most of your situation. It’s all in the mindset, and with a few simple tricks you can look at any challenge through rose-colored glasses and make the best of an unexpected obstacle.
1. Expect the unexpected
When you are away from home, there is no telling what the world has in store for you. So don’t be surprised, alarmed or disappointed if there is a detour in your path. Travel is an adventure!
2. Be flexible
On vacation, you may not always get your first choice of things. That’s OK though, your second choice may turn out to be the best choice after all.
3. Don’t sweat the small stuff
If a maid forgets to bring in the towels, don’t grumble, just call the front desk and politely ask them to send some up. It’s not worth getting upset at the little stuff, this only adds negative impact on the overall enjoyment of your trip.
4. Put yourself in someone else's shoes
If your flight attendant is surly, or the server forgot something on your order, keep the smile on your face and still treat them with respect. Some simple kindness may be all that is needed to brighten their difficult day... and it will brighten yours too!
5. Respond with humor rather than anger
If someone frustrates you, make light of the situation to avoid conflict for all parties involved. You’ll more easily find an equitable solution to the situation at hand.
6. Take local customs in stride
While it may not be something you are used to, remember you are the guest in their country. Smile, take a deep breath.
It takes fewer muscles to smile than to frown, so put those good muscles to work and brighten your day as well as the day of those around you.
Remember some of the best memories come when unexpected things happen. It’s how you handle the situation that counts, and a sense of humor will always make things better.
